The City Government on Tuesday, January 2, spearheaded activities commemorating the 14thdeath anniversary of Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat, the city’s first-ever woman chief executive.

The commemoration ceremony kicked off with the 8am mass presided by Fr. Michael Ufana at the Holy Trinity Parish in Pasonanca. A brief but meaningful program, highlighted by messages on the significance of Mam Caling’s life, works and legacies to the present times, followed at the Jardin Maria Clara or the butterfly garden at the Pasonanca Park.

Mayor Beng Climaco and the Lobregat family headed by District I Cong. Celso Lobregat led the activities that also featured favorite songs of Mam Caling performed by the Cantamos Chorale of the Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College.

Zamboanguenos from all walks of life – Mam Caling’s relatives, friends, supporter,  fellow workers both in the government and private sectors and other people whose lives were touched by the late mayor – troop to the Jardin Maria Clara a day after the New Year to honor the first mayor of the city.

Mam Caling served as mayor from 1998 until her demise in 2004 due to cardiac arrest. Prior to her election as mayor, she served as the Representative of the city’s lone district in the House of Congress. She also served as constitutional convention delegate before her stint in Congress. (Sheila Covarrubias)
