Zamboanga City welcomes today, November 6, thousands of youth from different dioceses across the country as it hosts the 2017 National Youth Day, an event that provides opportunities for positive expression of youth ministers’ desire to embrace Christ’s mission among the youth.

The NYD in Zamboanga in Mindanao is held 11 years after the event was held in Davao City in 2006.

The Archdiocese of Zamboanga, organizer of the 5-day national event, has prepared an all-encompassing program of activities that aims to be a celebration of the ministry among and with fellow youth.

The opening day will be highlighted by a parade dubbed “Parada del maga Jovenez del Paiz at 4:30pm from the Metropolitan Cathedral in La Purisima St. to the City Coliseum in Tetuan.

Two other processions are slated during the week, the Gran Procesion Mariana or Grand Marian Procession on Nov. 7 at 4:45pm from the City Coliseum in Tetuan to the Fort Pilar Shrine in Rio Hondo and the Parada de maga Peregrinos or Pilgrims’ Parade on Nov. 9 at 4pm from Centro Pastoral in Gov. Camins to the Fort Pilar Shrine.

Mayor Beng Climaco has issued Executive Order 309 rerouting traffic, naming temporary one-way street, two way street and no entry in selected roads/ streets for the duration of the conduct of the National Youth Day in the city.

Mayor Climaco has called on all sectors to support and cooperate on all measures intended to ensure the success of the 5-day NYD. She also enjoined the youth all over the country to come to Zamboanga and participate in the NYD. “Come visit Zamboanga City and discover family, discover friends, discover fun, but most importantly find your faith.”

Archbishop Romulo de la Cruz said it is the goal of the NYD to “come to know God better and for the pilgrims to be able to share with others their relationship with God.”

The police and military authorities including the volunteers and other force multipliers are implementing a comprehensive security plan to ensure the orderly and peaceful conduct of the NYD.

The 2017 NYD theme follows the theme of the 32nd World Youth Day “The Mighty One has done great things for me and holy is His Name.” (Lk1:49). (Sheila Covarrubias)
