Sustaining solid waste management in the community

The Philippine Red Cross-Zamboanga City Chapter in partnership with the City Government concludes the conduct of the Waste Analysis Characterization Study (WACS) in barangay Ayala in line with the Promotion of Green and Circular
Economy through Civil Society Engagement and Good Governance in Highly Urbanized Coastal Cities in the Philippines program.

The WACS, conducted at the Sanitary Landfill area in Salaan, is comprised of a waste stream composition profile by material types, and corresponding solid waste weight estimates that can be used to evaluate the current solid waste management system and assist in determining future program waste diversion and conversion process. It is a 5 to 7-day activity to assess the barangay’s waste management program.

Ayala is one of the 8 barangays identified for the solid waste management program jointly undertaken by the PRC and the City Government through the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR). The 7 other barangays are Sta. Catalina, Tulungatung, Cawit, Maasin, San Roque, Recodo and Baliwasan.

The implementation of the Green and Circular Economy Program is based on a memorandum of agreement forged by Mayor John Dalipe and the Red Cross through Secretary General Gwendolyn Pang last 2023.
