Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso on Tuesday, May 5 convened the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB), together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region IX, and key stakeholders to address growing concerns over unregulated development in the islands of Zamboanga City.
During the meeting, Forester Domiliza B. Campaner discussed the current list of declared protected areas, noting that Once Islas is not yet included. She suggested the passage of a Sangguniang Panlungsod resolution to enable its local proclamation as a protected area while awaiting national declaration.
Mayor Olaso emphasized the need to protect and preserve the natural beauty of the city’s islands, citing the increasing number of infrastructure projects and residential structures, including those built by non-residents, as well as possible security risks linked to unregulated development. He urged the PAMB to support the inclusion of Once Islas alongside existing protected areas such as Pasonanca Natural Park and Great Santa Cruz Island.
It was agreed during the meeting, in coordination with the City Legal Office, that the city will prepare an executive order followed by a proposed ordinance to strengthen the protection and regulation of island developments.
Mayor Olaso also called on barangay captains to immediately report any abuse or exploitation of natural resources to ensure prompt action and enforcement. (Sheyn Arambala) ( photo credits: Miljohn Mancao)
