Bothered by the viral video of a mauling incident involving college students from two universities, Mayor Khymer Olaso on Monday urged officials of different universities and colleges in the city to take urgent steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The mayor issued the call in an emergency meeting he initiated Monday morning, August 18 at his office in City Hall.

“Please talk to your students, we do not want similar incidents to happen in the future,” the mayor appealed, as he strongly condemned the act of the students involved in the video that has gone viral in social media.

The chief executive is interested to know the progress of the investigation on the incident and is willing to join school authorities in meeting with the concerned students as well as their parents.

After meeting with the university and college presidents and representatives Monday, Mayor Olaso will likewise confer with barangay officials where the different colleges and universities are located, to seek their cooperation in monitoring students while in their the so-called standby or hang-out points.

“Our efforts to promote Zamboanga City will be in futile if we do not do anything about these issue,” the mayor added.

Meanwhile, the Zamboanga City Police Office in a statement said the parties involved in the said incident that happened August 14, 2025 at a parking lot along Gov. Alvarez Street in Camino Nuevo have amicably settled the matter and expressed no intention to pursue legal action. (CMO-PIO) (photo credits: Kathy Wee Sit)
