Educators and scholars in the fields of history, engineering, forestry and architecture in the city on Wednesday, September 24, gathered for a 3-day activity dubbed “Safeguarding Our Legacy: A Comprehensive Workshop on the Principles and Practices of Cultural Heritage Conservation,” organized by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) in partnership with Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) and the DOST-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI).
Held at the Social Hall of the College of Teacher Education in WMSU, the 3-day workshop held from from September 24 to 26, aimed to equip participants with useful advice on preserving historical sites and artifacts from professionals in the field.
More than just technical training, the program sought to promote a greater understanding of conservation tactics that respect our common past while guaranteeing the sustainability of heritage resources for future generations. The activity also provided an overview of the DOST-FPRDI, a division of the Department of Science and Technology, and its joint wood identification projects with the NHCP.
Gracing the event, Mayor Khymer Olaso underscored the significance of cultural heritage conservation. “Conserving cultural heritage is a complex, multifaceted endeavor that requires a delicate balance of technical expertise, community engagement, and respect for the past. By adhering to these principles and practices, we can ensure that our cultural heritage continues to inspire and educate future generations.”
On the sidelines, Mayor Olaso toured the University’s Museum, accompanied by WMSU Centro de Estudio Mindanao (CDEM) head Dr Melanie F. Lear and WMSU Museum Coordinator Dr Jiellzon Jaime Villarama. In addition, the mayor visited the College of Engineering, reminiscing about old times and reconnecting with the institution where he studied Civil Engineering.
Present during the opening program were WMSU President Dr. Ma. Carla Ochotorena, represented by the university’s Chief of Staff Dr. Berhana Flores, NHCP Chairperson Prof. Regalado Trota Jose Jr., BARMM BCPCH Representative Eira Salem, and various others.
