The City Government of Zamboanga reaffirms its strong commitment to the education sector as Mayor Khymer Olaso joins the celebration of this year’s National Teachers’ Day Thursday, October 2, at Mayor Vitaliano D. Agan Coliseum in Tetuan.

Themed “Teachers: Our Guiding Lights, Our Enduring Strength,” the event underscored the invaluable role of teachers in shaping the future of young learners.

In his message, Mayor Olaso expressed gratitude to educators, including those who guided him from elementary to college. He serenaded the crowd with a song inspired by Billy Joel’s classic tune, “You May Be Right,” and affirmed the city government’s support through various education initiatives, such as P20 million worth of tables and armchairs, and the construction of a six-storey school building with an elevator for public schools most in need.

“Nohay estudyante bobo, kay todo estudyante ta aprende! (There are no dull students, for all are capable of learning!),” Mayor Olaso said, stressing the essence of teachers in nurturing learners.

The mayor also shared that during his teaching years at the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZCSMST), he often gave away his own salary to help underprivileged students. “My dedication in life is to serve the people,” he emphasized.

As a gesture of appreciation, Olaso directed the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) to distribute five kilos of rice each to all teachers present. He likewise raffled off from his own pocket, allowing each teacher to receive P1,000.

Olaso also invited the teachers of all faiths, including the Roman Catholic, Islam and others to join him in praying for the victims of the recent earthquake in Cebu City.

Additional raffle prizes from sponsors, including electric fans, kettles and kitchenwares, were also distributed to teachers.

Present during the occassion were Dr. Ruth Fuentes, CESO III – Regional Director; Dr. Roy Tuballa, CESO V – Schools Division Superintendent; Dr. Victoria Mangaser, Chief, CID; Dr. Basilio Uy, OIC-Chief, SGOD; school principals and other distinguished guests.
