Officials from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-IX) pay a courtesy visit to Mayor Khymer Olaso Friday, August 22 in City Hall, affirming their commitment to help advance Zamboanga’s tourism through science, technology, research and innovation.

During the visit, Mayor Olaso sought DOST-IX’s assistance in providing machines, equipment and technological solutions that could enhance the production of tourism-related products. The discussions included technologies for making souvenirs like keychains and handicrafts, 3D printing of local designs, food processing and preservation equipment and eco-friendly packaging solutions which aim to to boost the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the city.

The delegation was led by Acting Regional Director Jennifer Pidor, Assistant Regional Director and Technical Operations Services Officer Ricardo Apolinario III and Supervising Science Research Speacialist Thelma Diego.

Mayor Olaso emphasized that these technologies should not only benefit established businesses but also provide opportunities for low-income residents to generate income and improve livelihoods.

The agency expressed full support, noting that its interventions could be tailored to meet the pressing needs of the city, particularly in producing products with both economic and tourism potential.

Olaso added that he would consider allocating funds for these initiatives in the city’s 2026 annual budget once DOST-IX submits its project proposals for discussion and approval. (Arvin Midel) (photo credits: Roselyn Bunot)
