Dalipe requests DILG for add’l police, ZC security

Mayor John Dalipe lobbied national government to reinforce Zamboanga City’s security during a caucus of the region’s representatives and local chief executives Friday, August 12.

Citing the city’s growing population and the upcoming Hermosa Festival celebrations, Mayor Dalipe personally requested DILG Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. for additional police personnel and for the recall of the PNP attrition quota assigned to other areas back to Zamboanga City.

“Yun population namin is 1 million, and our police personnel is 1,500, yun ratio is 1:700, that is if you base on the local population,” said Mayor Dalipe in the interfacing session spearheaded by the DILG with Secretary Abalos and other officials in Pagadian City.

Counting the presence of residents and commuters from the surrounding regions, Zamboanga City’s daytime population swells to 1.3 million, pushing the police to population ratio to 1:860, the mayor explained.

Other concerns lobbied to DILG were the mayor’s request for the fast-tracking of the construction of the City Jail, and to have more fire trucks allocated to the City’s emergency response units.

Sec. Abalos promised to look into the security plans of Zamboanga City and the neighboring regions to properly coordinate the security needs and requests of Mayor Dalipe.

The DILG Secretary also praised Mayor Dalipe’s proactive measures for security.

“Maganda yun thinking ni Mayor John, hindi pa nangyayari, wala pa nangyayari, pero he is forward thinking, sinasabi niya huwag na natin antayin na may mangyari,” said Sec. Abalos. (Jasmine Mohammadsali)
