City steps up crackdown vs illegal parking fee collection

The City Administrator’s Office has intensified campaign against all forms of illegal activities specifically unauthorized collection of parking fees in areas identified by the local government as free public parking sites.

This, in light of reports that some unscrupulous individuals are charging parking fees in public parking areas recently opened by the city such as the one located at the former City Theater area in I. Magno Street.

Assistant City Administrator Rodolfo Saavedra Jr. said the city government is taking aggressive steps to stop illegal collections especially during late night parking.

He said Mayor John Dalipe does not tolerate illegal collection of parking fees from vehicle owners, which is why the chief executive has ordered the crackdown against these unscrupulous individuals.

For one, schedule of parking attendants has been adjusted to start from 7am to 4pm and from 5pm to 12 midnight to ensure that illegal parking collectors will not prey on vehicle owners.

Recall that Mayor Dalipe has announced the opening of new public parking sites for both four-wheeled vehicles and motorcycles amidst the continuous and intensified implementation of the road clearing operations as mandated by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).

The DILG directive is traced back to 2019 when former President Rodrigo Duterte instructed LGUs to “reclaim public roads that are being used for public ends. (Sheila Covarrubias)
