The value of “corazon” or heart in public service took center stage during the city government’s flag-raising ceremony Monday morning, June 8, as officials emphasized that compassion, sincerity and genuine concern for others remain at the heart of effective governance.
Mayor Khymer Olaso, represented by City Human Resource Management Officer Marinyd Tingcang said that while policies, systems and workplace initiatives are important, they cannot fully achieve their purpose without a genuine commitment to serving Zamboangueños.
Tingcang stressed that programs such as GETS (Greet, Eye Contact, Thank You and Smile), SAFE (Smile, Assist with Care, Foster Collaboration and Ensure Ease), and the Be Wise campaign on responsible social media use are meaningful only when carried out with empathy, integrity and a heart for public service.
She reminded city officials and employees that public service goes beyond compliance with rules and procedures, calling on them to treat every client with respect, professionalism and compassion.
These initiatives reinforce the values and ethical standards embodied in Republic Act No. 6713 or the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees.
Meanwhile, the city’s response to the earthquake highlighted the commitment of frontline personnel and emergency responders who remained on duty to monitor developments and ensure public safety amid concerns over aftershocks and possible tsunami threats, reflecting the city’s preparedness and readiness to respond emergencies.
Prior to her message, the city government also commended Ateneo de Zamboanga University’s (AdZU) Sofia Alessandra Bakkour for her academic excellence and youth participation, citing her achievement as valedictorian of AdZU Grade School Class of 2026.
Also present during the ceremony were City Administrator Percival Ramos, department heads, and representatives from the Boy Scouts of the Philippines – Zamboanga City Council (BSP-ZCC) and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP-9).(Arvin Midel) (photo credits: Kathy Wee Sit)
