City Hall scouting for lot for halal slaughterhouse

The city government of Zamboanga is currently scouting around for a lot where to construct the P5 million halal slaughterhouse in the east coast, a project of the Department of Agriculture (DA) central office through the representation of District 2 Congressman Mannix Dalipe.

Under the proposal, the DA central office will finance the construction of a halal slaughterhouse and equipment, while the city government will provide the lot within the industrial zone pursuant to the Zoning Ordinance.

The city government will also run the operational and maintenance of the halal slaughterhouse, including the creation of personnel positions and hiring of at least 30 personnel.

Off hand, the city through the city planning’s and city assessor’s offices was considering Barangay Mampang, being within the industrial zone, as suitable for halal slaughterhouse, the problem is, the city does not have a land there.

The city is looking for at least 3,000 sqm lot for the project.

The halal slaughterhouse will be a manual facility for goats, cows, and carabaos that will be slaughtered in accordance with Muslim traditions.

So far, only the cities of Cotabato and Davao have halal slaughterhouse.

Acting City Planning and Development Coordinator Ma. Luz Agbayani presided over a meeting on the project proposal with representatives from DA and other offices concerned.

Also in attendance were Executive Assistant Amado L. Jr. Slaughterhouse Master Amelita F. Amar and representatives from the City Engineer’s Office, and City Veterinarian.-(Vic Larato)
