The Alsons Power Scholar Awards for Athletic and Academic Excellence were handed over to seven Alsons Power Hidilyn Diaz scholars in a fitting ceremony Tuesday at the Western Mindanao Power Corporation diesel plant in Sangali, east of this city.
Oscar Benedict E. Contreras III, head of Alsons Power Corporate Communications, said the awardees had demonstrated exceptional athletic and academic excellence.
They were: Kirby Kent A. Alas-as, currently Grade 8 at Talon-Talon National High School, for placing 1st in his class for SY 2019-2020 and SY 2020-2021; Hilary B. Diaz, a Grade 10 student at Mampang National High School, who placed 4th in her class in SY 2020-2021 and 12th in class in SY 2021-2022; Desiree Jane Garcia, Grade 11 at the Universidad de Zamboanga, for placing 8th in class for SY 2020-2021 and 6th in class in SY 2021-2022; Jeaneth M. Hipolito, Grade 10 at Mampang National High School, received two awards—first award, for placing 2nd in class in SY 2020-2021 and 1st in class in SY 2021-2022 and second award, for winning bronze medal at the 2019 World Youth Weightlifting Championship held in Jeddah, KSA.
Also two awards for Rosegie Ramos, Grade 10 student at Mampang National High School, for placing 3rd in her class in SY 2021-2022, and for winning gold, silver and bronze medals at the 2020 Youth World Cup in Peru, bronze medal at the 2022 Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam, and three gold medals at the 2022 Asian Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championship in Uzbekistan; Rose Jean Ramos, Grade 11 at the Universidad de Zamboanga, for his gold and silver medals from the 2020 Youth World Cup in Peru, gold at the 2021 Youth World Cup in Jeddah, two golds and 1 silver at the 2022 Youth World Weightlifting Championships in Mexico, and four golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze at the 2022 Asian Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championships in Uzbekistan, and; Mango Prince David B. Tarro, Grade 10 at the Zamboanga City High School (Main), for being 12th placer in her class in SY 2019-2020.
Now on its 6th year, the Alsons Power Hidilyn Diaz Scholarship Program currently has 14 scholars, all homegrown weightlifting athletes undergoing free training at the Hidilyn Diaz Gym in Barangay Mampang, while Alsons Power provides them with annual stipend for school-related expenses such as uniforms, shoes, bags and school supplies, as well as monthly allowances for transportation and food.
Contreras said the partnership with Olympian Hidilyn Diaz began in 2016 as part of Alson Power’s commitment to help provide more educational opportunities for young people in the areas where the power company operates, and Zamboanga City is one of those areas, having been operating here for 25 years (since 1997) through the 100MW WMPC diesel plant in Sangali.
Present during the awarding ceremony were Director Jojo Dalipe, representing District 2 Congressman Mannix Dalipe, Councilor Jerome Santos representing Mayor John Dalipe, City Sports Development Officer Cecilia Atilano, former councilor Elbert Atilano, WMPC Manager Pete Torejon and Engr.
