The Zamboanga delegation to the recently concluded National Batang Pinoy Games held in Baguio City, emerged 7th place in the overall ranking with 19 gold, 24 silver and 18 bronze medals.
As this developed, Mayor Beng Climaco warmly welcomed the Zamboangueño athletes during the latter’s courtesy call in City Hall, as she recognized them for their feats.
“On behalf of the City Government, we thank you and we recognize all our athletes for victoriously representing our city in the Batang Pinoy. We are very proud of you,” the mayor said during her regular press briefing in City Hall, Monday. She likewise commended the efforts of the athletes’ coaches, parents and guardians as well that contributed to the exemplary performance of the athletes.
The Zamboanga delegation ranked 7th out of the total 94 local government units that participated in the weeklong competition. The city’s basketball team (boys) emerged as champion in the basketball event. Other teams that significantly contributed to the medal haul were the city’s muay thai, boxing, archery, weightlifting, karatedo and athletics delegations among others.
Mayor Climaco vowed to continue supporting the city’s sports and youth development program as part of her Security, Health and Education (SHE) thrust.
She stressed that her administration is focused on the wellbeing of the youth to ensure a better future for the children of Zamboanga.
Batang Pinoy is the national youth sports competition of the Philippines for athletes under 15 years old including out of school youth. (Sheila Covarrubias)
