City initiates first corn derby to boost farmers’ yield, income

In an effort to provide farmers more opportunities to attain higher yield and income, Mayor John Dalipe Tuesday, July 2, spearheads the ceremonial planting for the first-ever city-initiated corn derby in Zamboanga Peninsula.

The corn derby was held at the Bernardo’s 3.5-hectare farm in Ayala with the participation of 7 private companies featuring 12 top hybrid varieties and cutting-edge technology.

Mayor John Dalipe reiterated his administration’s commitment in supporting the agricultural sector, particularly the farmers, recognizing their vital role in the lives of every Zamboangueño.

Spearheaded by the City Agriculturist Office, the corn derby is designed to showcase corn varieties to help farmers choose their preferred corn variety.

This will boost production and income, enhance corn yield to ensure food security, increase the availability of locally produced animal feeds, as well as to reduce the economic burden of importing corn for human and animal consumption.

The agricultural inputs, funded by the city government, are in the process of being delivered and will immediately be distributed to farmers, as planting is scheduled to commence next week.

Present during the activity were Councilor Al-Jihan Edding, City Agriculturist Arben Magdugo, HUCAFFC Chairman Raul Ramon Bucoy, DA Provincial Coordinating Officer Nonong Estrada, representatives from the seven participating companies and farmers.
