Mayor banners P1.9B edu fund at principals’ summit

Mayor Beng Climaco yesterday challenged the gathering of school principals and head teachers to dream big and avail of all opportunities for career development as she bannered the city government’s support to education amounting to P1.9 billion in a span of four years, the biggest so far under any administration.

“I want you to dream big, take on the challenge without being choosy. Fight your own battle and own fear,” Climaco told the 160 school principals and head teachers attending an orientation for Professional Enhancement Training (PET) for Teachers initiated by the City Mayor’s Office at the Grand Astoria Hotel.

She said part of the budget for education this year and next year is the construction of 21 climate change resilient school buildings amounting to P905.12 million, covered courts with bleachers worth P32.64 million, and P74.56 million allocation for the purchase of 84,579 armchairs.

The amount of P69.99 million has been appropriated for the allowance/cash incentives for 5,833 teachers at P1,000 per month, and P5.92 million for the conduct of PET.

At least 6,404 elementary and secondary teachers are expected to undergo PET activities today, Sept. 5, and tomorrow, Sept. 6, at Centro Latino. Last year, there were 5,600 teachers who participated in PET.

The mayor also told the principals that she will continue giving out school bags and supplies to Grade 7 students only to encourage them to pursue their junior and senior high school education.
