Safety measures in Zambo canning factories sought

A technical working group (TWG) has been created to investigate all canning factories in Zamboanga City for them to come up with standard safety measures in work places.

Dr. Elmeir Apolinario, head of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO), said the TWG will be composed of representatives from his office, the City Engineer’s Office, the City Health Office and the Bureau of Fire Protection.

He said the creation of TWG was contained in a resolution approved during the CDRRMC meeting last May 28 following the boiler explosion in a canning factory in Barangay Talisayan on said date.

A thorough investigation will also be conducted into the incident.

Recall, a worker was killed while two others were wounded when the industrial steam machine or boiler inside a factory in Barangay Talisayan here heated up and exploded around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28.

Police said Zacarias Alberyo Rico, 49, assistant boiler operator of the Southwest Asia Canning Corporation, died on the spot.

His other companions, Francisco Caunsag Dumagal, 39, the boiler’s head operator; and Mark Anthony Romano Villaflores, 28, the canning factory’s safety officer, were injured in the explosion.
