“El Museo de Zamboanga” is envisioned as the premier repository of the Zamboanga’s heritage for the continuous learning, appreciation, enrichment and enjoyment of the local culture and history. It is one of the major strategies specifically identified as a priority development in line with the City’s Mission and Vision. “El Museo de Zamboanga” aims to manifest its commitment to:
discover our diverse cultural personality; a legacy in providing opportunity for learning,
raise the level of cultural awareness,
increase deep appreciation of the local history, culture and its unique language Chabacano,
spearhead programs on heritage conservation, documentation, preservation and enrichment of the uniquely diversified Zamboanga cultural heritage,
and encouraging more response and support from the Zamboangueño community.
“El Museo de Zamboanga” is located at Jardin Maria Clara Lobregat Complex, Pasonanca Park, Zamboanga City. The main building is composed of a two-tier octagonal structure containing the museum galleries and administration, and a separate structure for the general maintenance, laboratory works and storage of exhibit materials and furnishings. It is composed of two exhibit centers: main hall for the permanent exhibit showcasing the historical evolution of the city. The other area is semi-permanent showcasing prominent personalities, lifestyle and culture of the city.
The City Museum was through the efforts and visions of the Museum Committee and support of the Sangguniang Panglungsod. It is established through the mandates of Ordinance No. 109 Series of 1990, Ordinance No. 233 Series of 2001, Executive Order No. CL-171-2007, and Ordinance No. 342 Series of 2008. The most significant is Ordinance No. 378 Series of 2011 which specifies the creation, composition and operation of the City Museum known as “El Museo de Zamboanga”. The Zamboanga Museum Committee and the Technical Working Group were created through the issuance of Executive Order CL-438-2012 in March 2012. The city’s initial comprehensive programs on Cultural Development is the “El Museo de Zamboanga” charged with the responsibility of storing, archiving and documenting the history and culture of Zamboanga, particularly the diversified cultural personality through exhibitions, research and information campaigns.
