The Office of the City Veterinarian (OCVet) reiterates its invitation to all dog and cat owners to avail of the free spay/neuter program that will be conducted from June 18 to 21 in four strategic locations.

According to City Veterinarian Dr. Mario Arriola, the activity will kick off on June 18 at OCVet’s premises in Barangay San Roque. Subsequent spay/neuter procedures will be conducted in Barangays Tetuan (June 19), Sta. Maria (June 20), and Baliwasan (June 21).

The procedure is free, according to the city official, but will be on a first come, first served basis.

The City Government of Zamboanga through OCVet, together with the Humane Society International, the Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office IX, and the Philippine Veterinary Medical Society, are looking to perform 300 spay/neuter operations in the course of four days.

The joint spay/neuter undertaking is part of OCVet’s mandate to promote animal welfare and responsible pet ownership as well as ensure public safety in the city.

Spaying or neutering refers to a surgical procedure to render a dog or cat unable to produce litters of puppies or kittens. Spaying refers to an operation in which both ovaries and generally the uterus are removed from the female animal. Neutering the male animal refers to removing both testicles from the scrotum through a small incision. (Source: http://www.spayfirst.org/programs/what-is-spay-neuter/)
