The City Treasurer’s Office Wednesday initiated the public opening and verification of the boxes containing election materials for the May 14 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections as part of the mandated procedure under the election code.

Witnessed by Mayor Beng Climaco and District I Cong. Celso Lobregat on their individual capacity as head of major political parties in the city, District I Election Officer Atty. Stephen Roy Canete and other concerned individuals, the procedure was done at the office of City Treasurer Romelita Candido at 11am Wednesday.

The sealed boxes which contain official ballots, election returns and sample ballots were shipped by COMELEC-Manila via a courier to the CTO, the custodian of the election materials.

Candido said the procedure will help ensure that the poll materials/ paraphernalia are in order and complete and will pave the way for the CTO to sort out the same for distribution to the Board of Election Inspectors (BEI) starting May 12.

The CTO has rented a warehouse for the storage of the ballot boxes, as the Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports complex where the paraphernalia used to be stored, is under rehabilitation.

The center for the distribution of the election paraphernalia on May 12 will be at the City Coliseum in Tetuan. Meanwhile, preparations for the barangay and SK elections in Zamboanga are now fever pitch. COMELEC Zamboanga in coordination with the security forces and Department of Education (DEPED) has been conducting a series of orientations and seminars pertaining to the conduct of the elections.
