Mayor Beng Climaco promised the continued support of the local government in the development of the City’s young and promising athletes as part of the sports development program of Zamboanga City.

“We strongly support the sports program of the City,” reaffirmed Climaco who on Monday, November 6, recognized the latest batch of athletes who brought honor to the City in their respective fields.

Recognizing rigorous training as an integral component to the development of an athlete, Climaco has promised the athletes the use of the local government’s facilities for their training needs.

“We the city government will continue to allow our athletes to utilize our facilities for free because we want to develop in the grassroots all our athletes so that they will be able to really be the best in their fields,” she said.

The chief executive also said that she will be coordinating with the Department of Education to encourage equal opportunities for all athletes.

Climaco has also called for the review of the utilization of the special education funds for the needs of local athletes in various sport competitions to ensure transparency, fairness, and equitability.

During the Monday morning flag ceremony, Climaco recognized the Zamboanga City Swimming Team, which brought home 76 medals from competing other Mindanao teams at the 2017 PSI Short Course Swim Series in Butuan, and the Zamboanga City Bowling Team who garnered accolades during the Mascara Bowling Tournament in Bacolod City.

The athletes expressed their thanks to Mayor Climaco, with the ZC Swimming Team in particular citing the local government’s support in allowing the use of its sports facilities as helpful in developing and growing the swimming community in the City.

“That pool is really designed for you because you represent Zamboanga. Use it freely because we want you to really master the art of swimming,” Climaco said.  (Jasmine Mohammadsali)
