Mayor Beng Climaco Monday challenged fellow public servants to live up to the ideals of Dr. Jose Rizal by providing quality service to clients amid the challenges, as she led Zamboanguenos in the commemoration of the 156th birth anniversary of the national hero.

Espousing on the celebration’s theme: “The Emergence of Peace, Solidary and Good Governance”, Mayor Climaco recognized the different agencies of government that offer their 24/7 service to the people to ensure security and peace in Zamboanga City.

“We who are working in government should stand in solidarity with our security forces in these very challenging times. We thank them for their sacrifices,” she declared.

However, she expressed dismay at the quality of service provided by personnel of a government hospital where victims of a vehicular accident were rushed the night before. She recounted that she was at the said hospital to respond to a call for help from the victims and personally experienced the inferior services provided to the patients.

“They (medical attendants) do not have empathy for the patients,” she said stressing “may we have the empathy of Dr. Jose Rizal, to go out of our way to extend our service to clients despite of the challenges that we face.”

She continued: “Dr. Rizal in his final moments knew that he will die and be executed and yet he took the bullet for love of country and a lot of our soldiers and lawmen have taken the bullets for the love of country”.

She said the national hero has left the legacy of education for the youth and hoped that people of today will support in solidarity, the dreams and aspirations of Dr. Jose Rizal “for peace and good governance by dedicating our life to God and country.”

The commemoration of Rizal’s 156th birth anniversary was attended by City Government officials and representatives from other government and non-government agencies including private organizations, civil society organization and other sectors.

The simple  yet meaningful ceremony, organized jointly by the City government and the Order of the Knights of Rizal, kicked off with the flag raising ceremony, floral offering and commemorative program. (Sheila Covarrubias)
