Mayor Beng Climaco yesterday cited the need to intensify programs to reduce childhood illnesses and deaths, as she spearheaded together with City Health Officer Dr. Rodel Agbulos the Garantisadong Pambata (GP) program in line with her priority thrust on Security, health and education (SHE) program.

The GP program is a campaign to support various health programs aimed at reducing childhood deaths and illnesses by promoting positive child care behaviour among parents and child caregivers. It is jointly undertaken by the Department of Health and the local government unit and seeks to give children below 5 years old the health services they need.

The launching of the program coincided with the quarterly meeting of the Local Nutrition Council chaired by Climaco in Tetuan Monday morning.

Mayor Climaco lauded the GP program stressing it will help ensure a healthy future for the children. She likewise called on parents and child caregivers to exhaust all means to reach out to children particularly those staying in remote areas and provide them the routine health services.

Zamboanga City has been faring well in terms of the implementation of nutrition programs with its recognition as a consistent outstanding regional winner in nutrition (CROWN) by the DOH through the National Nutrition Council. The city has also been a consistent Green Banner Awardee as outstanding implementer of nutrition action plan with a 90% accomplishment.

The chief executive urged the health workers to continue exerting their best efforts to provide the needed health services to all children in the city.

In previous years, the GP program offered only deworming and Vitamin A supplementation. Lately, the program has expanded to including other strategies focusing on health and welfare of children. (Sheila Covarrubias)
