Zambo bags ‘Social Service’ award

Zamboanga City on Thursday was recognized as one of the country’s top model cities excelling in the delivery of social services particularly for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and health services.

Mayor Beng Climaco together with City Social Welfare and Development Officer Socorro Rojas and other city officials received the Social Service Oriented Award- Top Model Cities from the Manila Times during formal awarding rites held at the New World Manila Bay Hotel May 11.

The Top Model Cities Award was staged by the Manila Times, the oldest existing English newspaper for the most liveable urban centers across the Philippines and had experts on sustainable development as among the jurors.

There were 37 shortlisted cities from all over the Philippines and 13 cities including Zamboanga City occupied the top spots and were recognized during the awarding rites.

Zamboanga City excelled in the category of social services because of its efficient and effective programs for senior citizens, PWDs and health services.

For the senior citizens, the city government has been constructing centers for elderly in the different barangays and has been actively advocating for the implementation of laws for the welfare and benefit of the elderly sector.

The city was the first to create the PWD unit under the City Social welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) which looks into the welfare of the PWD sector. And in terms of health services, the city has been very aggressive in the implementation of its health programs such that it is one of the priority thrusts of the local government through the Security Health and Education (SHE) program.

The Manila Times is not only the Philippines’ oldest English newspaper but also one of the top and most respected news organizations in the country. It’s wide readership base covers the A and B and C markets through its nationwide distribution and online accessibility. (Sheila Covarrubias)
